What is Bamboo Flooring?

Bamboo floors are available in two shapes: the first is traditional which is made of grass strips that are glued together either side by side to create a vertical grain or on top of one another to create a horizontal or flat grain. They come in two colors; Natural which has a light yellow/caramel tone or Caramelized (toasted) where the natural strips are put into an oven to vapor the sugar and the color turns to light/medium brown. Bamboo floors are usually available in 5/8" thick construction which (even though engineered) are regarded as a solid floor that can be nailed to a plywood sub floor or glued directly to a concrete slab. They are also available in a traditional engineered pattern as well as Clic 'N' Loc.

The second style is Strand Woven where the strips are boiled to blend together and form a solid piece of wood. This type of bamboo is regarded as the best flooring innovation in the past decade and is rated harder than mahogany on the Janka scale with a 3000 PSI. It can also be nailed to a plywood sub floor or glued to a concrete slab.

Both traditional and strand woven bamboo can be sanded and refinished several times in the future. For glue down applications, we recommend using a skilled professional.
